Lemuel Lee Revolutionary War Pension Application National Archives File No. R6253 State of North Carolina Johnston County On this 11th day of Sept. 1834 personally appeared before me Nathan T. Allen & Wm. B. Allen two of the acting Justices of the Peace of the Court of Pleas & quarters Sessions in and for the County aforesaid Lemuel Lee a Resident of the State & County aforesaid aged about Eighty One years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the Following declaration in order to obtain the Benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 That he Entered the Service of the united States under the Following named Officers & Served as herein Stated viz That as near as he can recollect or find out he Enlisted in June 1778 in a Company of Light Horse or State Troops Commanded by Capt. John Whitley - Kedar Powell Lieut that he Enlisted for three years or during the War & that by agreement he was to perform Sundry Duties that is that he was always to be ready at a moments warning to march any where directed to aid in Suppressing Riots, Disturbances or insurrections that might happen in this or any of the adjacent Counties, as also to aid & assist in procuring & driving Cattle & Hogs from wherever they might be procured to the public Store or Military Ware Houses, being Houses where provisions & clothing for the use of the American Army was deposited there being three of them in Johnston County at different points along the River Neuse & one in Dobbs County now called Wayne which Capt. Whitley’s Company had to attend to - he was also to be ready at all times to Waggon or Cary provisions or clothing to the American Army wherever ordered - he together with others Enlisted on Sunday in the month of June & in a week or two afterwards he was called into Service - the Company being divided into Squads or Small Companies. Some Waggoning Corn & Fodder, Others driving Cattle & Hogs – Some Killing & Butchering, Some Salting and packing away in the public Store Houses, they would Continue this Employed untill the news of some Riot or insurrection of the Tories in any of the adjoining counties would reach the Camps when the whole Company would rendesvous at a certain point & march to the place whence the alarm issued & from thence would return to their former avocation, each man as he was Ordered by his Officers – we continued to be there Employed untill Some time in the month of July after Major Gregg or Craig Evacuated the Town of Wilmington, when we were Ordered to March towards Newbern, and understood with the intention of Joining Some Other Companies in Order to Intercept Major Gregg or Craig in his March, when they got below Kinston in Lenoir County the Centinels one night took a Tory prisoner next morning three of the Company were sent with the prisoner to our camp in Dobbs County, the rest went on & when we got to Trent River we met Major Gregg with a Regiment of British Soldiers – We had some Skirmishes with them but our Company being entirely too few in number we had to retreat & return to our former Camps & became actively employed as before stated and so Continued untill the end of the War – he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of the agency of any State or (if any) only on that of the State of North Carolina. We Jesse Adams a clergyman residing in the County of Johnston & William Bryan residing in the Same do hereby certify that we are well acquainted with the applicant Lemuel Lee who has subscribed & Sworn to the above declaration, that we believe him to be Eighty or Eighty one years of age that he is respected & believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a Soldier of the revolution & that we concur in that opinion Sworn & Subscribed the day & year aforesaid Nathan T.
