He served as a Justice of Morris County NJ from 1756.

He is widely but erroneously assumed to have served as a Captain in the American Revolution. However the Lemuel Bowers from Morris County who served as a Captain survived to file a pension claim as did his widow Sally. This Lemuel Bowers died too early to have filed these claims, and did not leave a widow named Sally. The recorded facts would indicate that his son Lemuel was the Captain in the army.
