  1. Lawrence Charles Roach reported for duty on 7 May 1942. He was a Staff Sergeant with the 3rd Pursuit Squadron, 24th Pursuit Group. He was taken prisoner and put in a POW camp in the Philippines. He was put aboard the Shinyo Maru, as one of 750 allied POWs being transferred to another location. The ship did not carry any marking to show that it was carrying POWS and was in a convoy with dother cargo ships. Intelligence reported, in error, that the Shinyo Maru was carrying 750 Japanese soldiers. Due to this error, the Shinyo Maru was attacked by the submarine USS Paddle near Lanboyan Point, Zamboanga Peninsula, Mindanao Island, The PHILIPPINES. The ship sank quickly, trapping most prisoners in the holds. Others were executed by the guards during the scramble to evacuate the ship or while in the water awaiting rescue. Although 82 prisoners survived and swam to shore, Roach did not survive.
