Kate Crowson was baptised on 27th September 1868 at Ufford in Northamptonshire, daughter of Elizabeth Crowson, formerly Shelton, and her husband Joseph Crowson, a stone mason and grocer. Kate appears in the 1871 census living with her parents and siblings at the grocer's shop in Crowson. Kate's mother died in 1873, when Kate was about five years old. The 1881 census finds Kate living with her widowed father and two brothers in Ufford.

On 8th October 1889, aged 21, Kate married Thomas Cox, a gardener from the nearby village of Barnack. They married at Barnack and lived there for a time after their marriage, having their first daughter there in 1890, and appearing there in the 1891 census living in a three roomed cottage on Main Street.

By 1893 they had moved to the Walcot Hall estate at Southorpe, between Barnack and Ufford. Thomas worked as a gardener for the estate and the family lived in a house on the estate. They went on to have another seven children there between 1893 and 1910. By 1911 Thomas was described as head gardener.

Kate died at Walcot on 28th August 1915, aged 46. Thomas outlived her by nearly 34 years, and remarried in 1918.
