Facts and Events
Kaethe was orphaned very young, and lived for a while in a Betten-Hausen orphanage and then with relatives by the name of Plaut in Halberstadt in central Germany. But she was not well treated by her relatives, so (Ferdinand Nussbaum) who was her cousin took her under his wing and got her a job in a kosher butcher store in Leipzig where she worked happily until she emigrated to the United States. - Louis Nussbaum, in a letter to Daniel J. Stern, dated September 10, 1994. Grete remember Kaethe baking Challah every Friday. Kaethe took mom somewhere on the subway when mom was about 12. The train was stopped because upline somewhere on another train a man stuck his head out the train window and was decapitated. When Kaethe heard about why the train was stopped she fainted and fell to the floor of the subway car as she had been standing and holding on to the pole. She immediately came to and got up, so mom didn’t have to handle anything after all. At 12 she probably wouldn’t have known what to do. Mom was amazed that Kaethe would faint from just hearing about a man being decapitated! She also remembered another in that Kaethe and Julius babysat for them sometimes and Jack and mom would secretly watch and giggle while they smooched on the couch! She and Jack would take turns going to the bathroom and this would break up the smooching session and annoy Kaethe & Julius which Jack & Mom thought was great fun. Since K and J married in 1940 this could be! In 1940 mom and J would have been 15 and maybe K & J dated a while before then.
