Served in the Lousiana State House of Representatives from East Baton Rouge Parish, 1880-84, as a Democrat. Served again, 1896-1900, as a member of the Populist Party. (The local Democratic Party, in which he had previously been very popular, waged political war against him in 1896 when he changed parties, as chronicled in the Baton Rouge Advocate. He still won, receiving nearly half again as many votes as the second-place finisher -- in a field of seven.)
