  2.   Haskell Venard in his article "The Family of Major James Fitch of Norwich and Canterbury, Conn.", TAG Vol. 46, does a survey of the children attributed to Major Fitch in several sources. It identifies the following commonly named children as not his: John, Bridget, Alice and William. However, Josiah is not named in any of the 5 sources surveyed (NEHGR, "Mason Family", p. 17:42; Source:Stiles, Henry R. History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut (1892); Source:Fitch, Roscoe Conkling. History of the Fitch Family A.D. 1400-1930; Source:Hall, Ruth Gardiner. Descendants of Governor William Bradford; Source:Jacobus, Donald Lines. Waterman Family). The source cited on this page, Savage, appears to be the only source naming Josiah (as part of a "correction" on p. 3:619), and Savage also makes many of the same errors disproved by Venard as well. No birth record for Josiah seems to be found, and no such person participates in the 1731 petition to divide part of the father's estate. He is not named as being part of the family by "Madam Niles" who would have been his half-sister if he was. It is not clear who Josiah is supposed to be once the parents are rejected, because there is no other information provided. There was a Josiah Fitch born to Benjamin Fitch and Hannah Reed, but not until 1723??
