Joshua Price was the child of parents who though it no unnecessary trouble nor disgrace to rear large families. Of his five brothers, two are now left. Of his four sisters, three remain. He came of a long-lived family on his mother's side. His maternal grandmother lived to the good old age of one hundred and four years. His mother was eighty-eight years of age when she died, retaining her faculties to the last. His grandparents were from the State of Maryland, and were members of the Lutheran church. Mr. Price was born in September, 1806, and at the age of 22 came to Michigan from Monroe Co., N.J., bringing a young wife with him. He settled on the farm where he lived for fifty-nine years and where he died. In one respect at least he was not like his parents. They had ten children, he none. His wife died in 1855 and he remained a widower, his sister Mary taking charge of his household affairs. The two events of his life were his coming to Michigan and the loss of his wife. Otherwise his career was uneventful. He was a successful businessman, possessed of a strong will. Cheerful and hospitable, "always there with the latch-string out," as one recently remarked. He was a man of strong likings and also powerful dislikings. He was always ready to respond to appeals for help from the stranger and the needy. He aided public enterprises, among other things assisting in the erection of the Congregational Church and in procuring its bell. He was always strong and healthy until a year ago last winter, though he was troubled with rheumatism in the winter for several years. Last fall it attacked him again with greater severity, and he was a great sufferer up to within two weeks of his death. Then, though the pain left him, his mind was clouded until he passed away at the age of eighy years and six months.
