In 1907, Jozef was listed as a cadette in the infantry and by 1911, he had advanced to a lieutenant in the 72nd Infantry Reserve. He was a soldier on the Russian front where he was injured in March of 1915, returning to duty in September where he was an active participant into 1917, when he crossed the Italian Front.
