  18. ↑ Mrs. Josephine Virginia Wells, 90, oldest lifetime resident of Cass county, died of a heart ailment early Wednesday morning at the home of a son, Rolfe L. Wells, near the village of Pokagon. The elderly pioneer was perhaps the best informed person in southwestern Michigan to tell of the growth of Niles, St. Joseph and Dowagiac from her personal knowledge. She was born in 1844 in a log cabin on the shores of Curtis lake, named after her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Curtis, who emigrated from the Empire state. Early in life, she married the late Dr. Chas. F. Wells, one of Cass county's earliest physicians. He died several years ago.
