Joseph was said to have entered the U.S. through Buffalo New York. He went to Omaha and then to Chicago. He enlisted in the 102nd New York Volunteers during the Civil War. He was in the infantry. He received U.S. citizenship papers upon discharge. However he returned to Canada and had a family before returning to the U.S. after 1881. He became a U.S. citizen again in 1923 in Chicago. Toward the end of his life he was living with his daughter Lettie in Vancouver British Columbia for some unknown reason. Elizabeth continued to live down the street from the James Wright family in Chicago. He is buried in the Ocean View, Sea View or Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
