Facts and Events
From the April 8, 1891, edition of the Elkader (Ia.) Argus Joseph Tinker, living about three miles from Volga, committed suicide Sunday by shooting himself in the forehead. He was subject to attacks of asthma, and just recovering from a siege of the grippe, his mind was somewhat unsettled, for he acted strangely for two or three days before his death. He committed the deed while his family was at church. Deceased was a native of Bohemia, a prosperous farmer, a soldier in the late war, and a member of the G.A.R. post of this place. He was 46 years old at the time of his death. An inquest was held Sunday evening by a justice from Mederville, Dr. J.H. Craig of this place being present. From the April 9, 1891, edition of the Elkader (Ia.) Register Sunday, April 5th, 1891, Joseph Tinker, residing in this township, south-east of town, was found dead in his barn. His family had gone to church, leaving him home alone as he was not feeling well, and upon their return he was found dead as above stated. He had been suffering for several weeks with la grippe and the asthma, which affected his mind, for he had not seemed like himself for a day or two. He was in good circumstances, being a well-to-do farmer, a good citizen, honest and highly respected. He will be missed by his many friends. Mr. Tinker was 46 years of age and was a native of Bohemia. He came to this country in early life with his parents and brothers and sisters, who have lived in Sperry township about 30 years. He served in the war of the rebellion and was a member of the G.A.R. post at Volga. Image Gallery
