The names of the spouses of Joseph Alfred Seaver as (1) Mary Elizabeth Hamlenbach (?) of Newark NJ and (2) Mrs. Statira B. Mc??? of PA about 1881 were provided by the Jesse Montgomery Seaver typescript (1924). BIOGRAPHY: In the early 1850's he went west and engaged in business in Iowa, returning east at the beginning of the Civil War, and took up his residence at Roseville NJ, removing to Brooklyn NY in 1888(?). He was a member of the Consolidated Stock Exchange and of the firm Ellis & Seaver stockbrokers. In the later years of his life he was superintendent of the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, Long Island (JMSeaver, 1924). CENSUS RECORDS: In the 1870 US Census, this family resided in the 11th Ward of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. The family included J. A. Seaver (age 36, male, white, a banker, $6000 in real property, $2500 in personal property, born NY), M. E. Seaver (age 29, female, white, keeping house, born NY), Blanche Seaver (age 9, female, white, born NY), Bessie Seaver (age 6, female, white, born OH) and A.D. Seaver (age 3, male, white, born NJ) [National Archives Microfilm Series M593, Roll 882, Page 466, Line 11]. In the 1880 US census, the Joseph A. Seaver (age 45, born NY, stock broker, father and mother born MA) family resided in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. The family included his daughter Bessie Seaver (age 16, born OH, father and mother born NY), son Alfred D. Seaver (age 13, born NJ, at school), daughter Mary Seaver (age 7, born NJ, at school), son Spencer R. Seaver (age 5, born NJ), and daughter Helen Seaver (age 3, born NJ). [LDS CD-ROM of 1880 US Census, complete record on LDS Microfilm 1,254,844, page 563B]. OBITUARY: An Obituary for J. Alfred Seaver was published in the New York Times newspaper, dated 20 January 1911. It reads: “Obituary Notes. J.ALFRED SEAVER, member of the firm of Ellis & Seaver, stock brokers, and a member of the Consolidated Exchange, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. Paul Staunton, 120 Park Street, East Orange, N.J., last Friday, and was buried on Sunday in Rosedale Cemetery, Orange. He was 77 years old. He was twice married and leaves a widow and five children of the first marriage.” |
