"My 3rd-great grandfather, Joseph Schonouer served during the opening years of the American Revolution, as a volunteer in Capt. Carl Marcke's Independent Troop of Light Dragoons commanded by Col. Armand. His service records on file at National Archives show his name spelled as "Joseph De Schonauer", apparently because Col. Armand had been authorized by the continental congress to raise a corp of Frenchmen. It is quite possible Joseph spoke french well, as his father had emigrated from the Jura mountain region of Switzerland, bordering what is now France. Also, many Pennsylvanians were either directly or indirectly involved in the France's Seven Year's War (1756-63), which had its North American beginnings in 1754 and was known in America as the French and Indian War, resulting in the final expulsion of France from continental North America."
