Joseph lived west of Anguilla Brook, Stonington, where he kept an ordiinary, "which was considered by travelers better than any other tavern for miles along the road." He is said to have engaged in the West Indies trade, "by which he was very wealthy" His will dated July 8 1715, was admitted to probate in New London, Conn. His widow withheld the will for a time, in a controversy. She objected because whe was given only her dower, one-third of the estate. The other two-thirds went to her grandsons, Saxton Palmer and Saxton Bailey. [McIntire Ancestry 1950 p 308]

    sometime of Stonington. 25 May, 1698. Joseph Saxton, you, as Adms. in the Right of your wife Hannah Saxton to the Estate of Nathaniel Chesbrough, sometime of Stonington, Decd, and Nathaniel Chesbrough, son of sd. Decd, you are both required to appear at the County Court to be held at New London on the 1st Tuesday in June next, then and there to answer the Complaint of Elihu Chesbrough, son of Elisha Chesbrough, sometime of sd. Stonington, also decd, in an Action on the Case for that you doe refuse and have refused & neglected to divide between him & you certain Lands & Appurtenances lying in sd. Stonington, given & devised by the last Will & Testament of Mr. William Chesbrough, sometime of sd. Stonington. Decd, unto his two sones, the aforesd Nathaniel Chesbrough and Elisha Chesbrough, both Decd, and soe of Right to be divided equally between the respective heirs of the sd. deceased brother. Unto the County Marshall, and return to the Court or Clerk before the Corte or Constable of Stonington.
