ARTICLE FROM THE FAYETTE WEEKLY DISPATCH Written in 1986 for the Tribune Review by William J. Means, of Fayette Co. Uniontown, Pennsylvania Editor's note: this is the first segment in a series of articles on Franklin Township which was one of the original nine townships, of Fahette County, PA. It would be difficult to establish an accurate timetable of the township. Perhaps in the middle 1700's or early 1800's. It was given mostly to hunting and farming. Among the earliest settlers in Franklin Twp. was William Rittenhouse, who came from New Jersey and settled in the area in 1777. Beside farming, he was also interested in promoting religion and community betterment, as more and more settlers poured into the community. He built a school house on his land, and SAMUEL BLANEY (not sure if he was an ancestor of Frank Blaney father of Mable Blaney but could be, as the family are located in the area); was secured as a teacher. He became a famous teacher in his tenure in Franklin Twp. School District. A robert Smith and John Freeman, another New Jersey man, also CONRAD BARRICKLOW (our ancestor from New Jersey) and Joseph Oglevee were among the earlier settlers. References
