Joseph Lehrer was born in Romansviller, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France on the 12th December 1763 and in about 1771, his parents moved the family from Bas-Rhin to Dabo, Moselle, Lorraine, France, which at the time had its German name of Dagsburg and was located in Alsace prior to the borders being redefined between Alsace and Lorraine. Joseph lived the rest of his life here until he passed away in Dabo, Moselle, Lorraine, France on the 8th June 1819.

At the time of the French revolution, Joseph and Marie Anne Ruffenach were married in Dabo, Moselle, Lorraine, France on the 8th April 1793. Joseph and Marie had seven children prior to Marie's death in 1804. Two and a half years after Marie's death, In Dabo on the 14th October 1806, Joseph married Catherine Schott. Joseph and Catherine had ten children, most of whom died as infants.
