Information about Joseph's parents is found in the the source book "A Century and a Half of Pittsburg and her People, Vol. III" which says that Stephen and Marie had a son "Joseph R., born November 26, 1837, in Rockaway, New Jersey, married Winifred Peede". Other children have more detail but this is all it says about Joseph.

My puzzlement comes about because of the census records for Stephen and Marie don't list a son Joseph R. The 1850 and 1860 records do list a Jotur R. and a Jetur R. and there is an enlistment record of Jetus R. Now I can grant that an enumerators handwriting might be bad one time, but three different records for Jotur/Jetur/Jetus??? I've found nothing for this Jotur/Jetur/Jetus after 1861 and the records available for Joseph R. begin with his marriage to Winifred in 1863. I'm uneasy about assuming Jotur/Jetur/Jetus is the same person as Joseph but unless the Pittsburg book is wrong, this has to be the same person. But no census records are found naming Joseph before 1870. Perhaps he didn't like that unusual name of Jetur and changed it to Joseph.

Currently, I am keeping the records of Jotur/Jetur/Jetus and Joseph separate until verification can be found that they are both the same person. From census records it appears that Joseph usually rented, never owned land. He apparently worked in the iron industry which would be in keeping with the other men in his family. There does appear to be some family connections because we find Joseph's widow, Winifred in her 80s living in 1930 in Hempstead Township, Freeport Village, Nassau County, New York in a hotel. The hotel was run by a Ward Frost. Joseph's sister Laura had married a Frank Frost and it should be researched to see if there is a connection there.
