Joseph's parents were John, born about 1600 and Hannah, born in Scituate. The Great Migration newsletter from NEHGS says "John Hanmer was in Scituate as early as 1635, removed briefly to Duxbury, and was back in Scituate by 1643, where he died in late 1676 or early 1677. [GM 2:3:207-10]

    The inventory of the estate of Joseph Hanmer, late of Scituate, deceased, was taken 12 Oct. [year not given] by Josiah Holmes, Joseph Berstow and mentions "the widow." Oath was made by Nathaniel Thomas 11 Apr. 1699. Approval of Capt. Nathaniel Thomas' administration account was dated 11 Apr. 1699 and he was acquitted of his bond.
