During the Revolution, he served as an officer in both the Pennsylvania Navy and the Continental Navy (and later as a privateer).S1

Like his father, an active freemason. On 15 Apr 1791, his Alexandria lodge ceremonially placed the first cornerstone marking the District of Columbia. Two years later, he also was present at the laying of the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol in Washington. (Pres. Washington joined them in barbecuing a 500-pound ox afterward.)S1
