!HISTORICAL: According to "Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Records", Vol.2, page 120 and testimony by his (Joseph Hawkins) daughter, Eunice, Joseph Hawkins Fitzgerald served as an officer, after the Revolutionary War under General Anthony Wayne in a campaign against the Indians. Update by Jpiperburk 13 Sept 2013: Joseph Hawkins Fitzgerald's military records state that he was born in Amherst Co., VA and enlisted in Staunton, Augusta Co., VA. in July 1792, serving in the 4th Sublegion commanded by Capt. Alexander Gibson, under Gen "Mad" Anthony Wayne. Joseph was working at a hostel (inn)at the time of his enlistment. His pension application states that he "was in the Battle of Fort Recovery and "was one of the 37 who held the fort". When Wayne met them he rubbed the shoulders of every man, saying "they were the bravest boys in the world" and they should have a handsome present on reaching Washington". Joseph served as a Private during his enlistment He may have also fought at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. He was honorably discharged on 13 July 1795. References
