411 Joseph Eddy (Benjamin, Joshua, Zachariah, Samuel, William), b. about 1745; d. Sept. 14, 1809 in his 64th year (Newspaper, Phoenix) ; m. June 1o, 1766, at Providence (V.R.), Phebe Eddy ; dau. of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Pierce) Eddy. (See No. 355.)

The following will in the Providence Probate Records has been discovered which proves that Joseph and his three brothers are not sons of Zachariah Eddy, of Glocester, as stated in the 1881 Gen. of the Eddy Family. After several bequests Margaret Tyning gave "to Joseph Eddy, son of Capt. Benjamin Eddy of Providence, late dec'd " £Io, when he is 21 years old. This was in 1765.

Joseph Eddy left a will dated Aug. 18, 1809. To his daughter Elizabeth, he gave his household furniture. He then ordered that the house and lot where he lived and his ship-yard lot should be sold and the money divided among his heirs, Joseph Eddy, Elizabeth Eddy, Nancy Taber, Samuel Eddy, Phebe Warner, George Eddy and grandson Asa Eddy, son of my son, Jesse Eddy. To his son Joseph Eddy, he left "my India-joint cane " (Prov. Prob. 10,493 and 494). He appointed his son-in-law, Thomas Taber, and his nephew, John Andrews, as his executors, and in this capacity they sold to Joseph Martin and William Mason two lots of land in Providence, one of which is bounded northerly on Ship St. and extends from Eddy St. to the Channel, and westerly on Eddy St. and is the same which John Field conveyed to Joseph Eddy on May 5, 1772 (Bk. 20,702). The second lot was south of the other one and was purchased in 1784 of John Field (21,40). This transaction was dated May 16, 1810 (33.198).

On the 5th of April 1779 Joseph Eddy sold a piece of land and wife Phebe signed off her dower rights (5.18).

Beside this land Joseph Eddy of Providence, shipwright, purchased of Edward Hawkins, " land in Cranston on the highway that goeth from Providence to Pawtuxet Falls, and bounds northerly on Jonas Wanton's farm where he now dwells." Barnard Eddy witnessed this transaction on May I I, 1770. (Cranston Deeds, 3.11.)

In Oct. 1775 it was decided by the people in Providence that measures should be taken to obstruct the harbor so that the British could not reach the town. Joseph Eddy, Barnard Eddy and John Updike were appointed to block the channel. Joseph gave other service in the War, as follows:

Joseph Eddy. Capt. Esek Eddy's co. of artificers acting as boatmen; enlisted Aug. 8, 1778; service, 20 days, on an expedition to Rhode Island. Roll dated Providence.

At the time of the 1774 Census, Joseph was a resident of Providence with a household of three males over 16, and two under 16; two females over 16 and three under 16. He appears in the Census of 1777 in Providence as between the ages nf
