Of Johann Kaupp's three sons, Joseph was the strongest, character wise, and the most aggressive. He was a farmer and seemed to be quite successful. It infuriated him that his brothers Will and Harry would borrow money from their mother and sister and had trouble paying it back.

These notes and comments were made by Virginia Spearman to William A. Coup.

Soon after his marriage to Elizabeth Atkinson Joseph enlisted in the 101st Infantry of Pennsylvania. After his daughter Alice was born, Joseph and his wife moved to Findlay in Hancock County, Ohio where his brother William had moved. In late 1863 or early 1864 both brothers moved to Wayne County. Joseph had a farm on the township line between Milton, township 18, and Greene, township 17 at the southwest corner of Rittman and Marshallville Roads, about one mile east of State Road #5, the Old Portage Trail. For several years all of the family farms were just a few miles apart in Wayne County. In 1881 Joseph moved to Ashtabula County, near Chapel Corners on Clay Street, Route 307. After Joseph sold the farm he retired and moved into Austinburg, Ohio.

This was from a report on the family written by Lucy Hall Pancoast.
