... (IV) Joseph R., tenth child of William (2) Cottom, and second son by his second wife, Nancy Cochran, was born in Dawson, Pennsylvania, October 27, 1878. He attended the public schools of Tyrone township and Dawson, Pennsylvania, later entering the University of Pennsylvania, whence he was graduated Doctor of Dental Surgery, class of 1906. In recognition of his ability in operative dentistry he was appointed a demonstrator in the operating clinic of the university, where he served for three years. He located in Dawson the same year, and is there well established in the practice of dentistry. He is a Republican in politics, a member of the Methodist Episcopal church; James Cochran Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons; Duquesne Alumni Chapter, Psi Omega, Dental Fraternity, and the Pennsylvania State Dental Society.
He married, in May, 1900, Blanche (Dorcas) Brown, born at Berlin, Somerset county, Pennsylvania, daughter of A.C. and Barbara Brown, now of Dawson. Children:
