1857 Archives of Maryland (www.msa.md.gov/msa/speccol/sc5400/sc5496/008000/008026/html/008026.html :2011), Biographical series, MSA SC 5496-8026, “Joseph Cornish (b. ? - d. ?), Fled from slavery, Dorchester County, Maryland, 1857.” MSA SC 5496-8031, “Solomon Cornish was one of the twenty-eight slaves to escape from the Cambridge District of Dorchester County on October 24, 1857.  Solomon escaped with his parents, Aaron and Daffney, and his four siblings.” Other Cornishes who also fled from slavery the same year: Aaron, Daffney, Edward, George Anthony, Perry Lake and Solomon. ** If this our Joseph Cornish? ** - 8/11/11.

1857 The Cambridge Democrat, dtd. Nov 4, 1857 “$300 REWARD - Ran away from the subscriber, from the neighborhood of Town Point, on Saturday night, the 24th inst., my negro man, AARON CORNISH, about 35 years old. He is about five feet ten inches high, black, good-looking, rather pleasant countenance, and carries himself with a confident manner. He went off with his wife, DAFFNEY, a negro woman belonging to Reuben E. Phillips. I will give the above reward if taken out of the country, and $200 if taken in the county; in either case to be lodged in Cambridge Jail. October 25, 1857 [Rev] Levi D. Traverse”

1861 CAN Census, Brant, Brantford, Queens Ward, ED 1, p. 71, ln 47) Joseph Cornish 34, colored, b. US, Epis Meth, blacksmith, they lived in a frame house, one story, one family, no real estate value listed. He owned two pigs, valued at $3, lived on one lot, his blacksmithing business valued at $300/year. His wife, Mrs. Cornish 30, white, b. Ireland, same religion. Their children, both colored, both b. UC: David 14, attended school; and Edward 7.

A Smith family on same page (ln. 17) headed by the widow Mrs. Smith 42, b. Ireland, Church of England, grocer, real estate valued at $1800, and her four children, all b. U.C.: Benj 20, single, salesman; Robt 17, single, law student; Ellen 15; and Margt 13. ** No idea if this Smith family is related to Eleanor **

1869 Buffalo City Directory (p. 260) no Joseph Cornish. The only Cornish mentioned is Elizabeth Cornish, dressmaker, 546 Main, h. same. Scanned image from distantcousin.com/Directories/NY/Buffalo/1869/, no information as to publisher of directory.

1870 US Census (NY, Erie, Buffalo, Ward 4, p 472, ln 12), Joseph Cornish, 43, mu, cook, b. MD, could read and write. His wife, Ellen Cornish, 42, mu, washing, b. England, both parents of foreign birth, could read and write. Living with them, Ellen’s apparent son, David Lee 25, mu, b. Canada, blacksmith, mother of foreign birth, could read and write. Also living in the same home with them but listed as a separate household: Washington Carter 53, mu, cook, b. VA; Eliza Carter 53, mu, washing, b. PA; William Bedford 28, mu, cook, b. PA; and Carter Charles 23, mu, waiter, b. NY.

1880 Unable to find this Joseph Cornish in the US Census, any state, however, Washington Carter was living in Buffalo at 33 William.
