Facts and Events
Joseph Browne may have been baptised on 19th April 1561 in Lingfield, Surrey ('son of William'). He was admitted to Queens College, Cambridge from 1579 and graduated (BA) in 158. He was the Rector of Ifield from 1590 to 1633. He married firstly Margery Patching on 1st February 1584 in Horley, Surrey. Margery was possibly baptised on 17th February 1565 in Horsham, Sussex the daughter of Richard Patching. She was buried on 15th December 1605 in Rusper, Sussex ('wife of Joseph'). Joseph married secondly Elizabeth Stone (a widow of a John Stone of the Nunnery) on 12th February 1607 in Rusper, Sussex and she was buried there on 15th September 1616 ('wife of Joseph'). Joseph was a witness to the 'Will' of Robert Stone of Rusper dated 2nd October 1615 and also to the 'Will' of John Stone dated 3rd February 1625. Joseph left a 'Will' dated 16th July 1633 and was buried in Rusper, Sussex on 15th October 1633 ('Clerk of Rusper'). Joseph and Margery had possibly seven children: 1. William Browne was baptised on 5th December 1585 in Horley Surrey. He married Jane Burgess (Burgis) on 20th June 1611 in Rusper, Sussex (Jane was the widow of John Burgess and her maiden name was Jane Mills). He was named as executor in his father Joseph Browne's 'Will' of 1633 and as overseer in his uncle Benjamin Brown's Will of 1638. William, Jane & family emigrated to America in 1646. Jane died of smallpox on the voyage and William died between 2-23rd July 1650 in Long Island, living with his daughter Mary Marvin. - see below under Personal History William Brown 1585 & also Documents - William Browne Emigration Documentation.William & Jane had seven children. 2. Stephen Browne was baptised on 15th May 1588 in East Grinstead, Sussex (this may be the son of another Joseph, but timeline fits). He was admitted to Christ's College, Cambridge in July 1604 and graduated (BA) in 1608 and obtained an MA in 1611 (source 15). He was ordained a Priest on 26th September 1611 (aged 23). He married Elizabeth Kidder on 19th January 1612 in East Grinstead, Sussex (license issued at Lewes on 3rd January and Stephen shown to be a Clerk: suriety Anthony Hogett of Clive near Lewes, clerk (Eastgrinsted)). He was Rector of St Michaels, Southhampon in 1612. He was not mentioned in father Joseph Browne's 'Will' of 1633 so assumed he died prior to this but his wife Elizabeth was mentioned (as daughter in law). 3. Joseph Browne was born about 1590 (source is church inscription -see below. He presumably died prior to 1633 as he was not mentioned in fathers 'Will'). 4. Sarah Browne (Sara) was baptised on 22nd October 1592 in Rusper, Sussex. She probably firstly married William Lakeir on 29th October 1611 in Rusper, Sussex. As Sarah Laker, widow, she married secondly Arthur Fenner on 9th January 1615 in Rusper, Sussex. Sarah (& Arthur) were mentioned in her father Joseph Browne's 'Will' of 1633 (as was her daughter Phoebe). Sarah & Arthur had eight children (not verified)(Sarah, Thomas, Arthur, William, Joseph, John, Phoebe & Samuel. They were all possibly baptised in Horley, Surrey, except Samuel who was baptised in Ifield on 22/09/1622). Possible baptism dates -not verified - are 26/11/1615, 20/07/1617, 17/10/1619, 11/09/1625, 22/06/1628, 13/02/1630 & 05/01/1633. Sarah & Arthur & family probably emmigrated to America in about 1646. 5. Susan Browne was baptised on 11th January 1596 in Rusper, Sussex. She married Thomas Leachford (shown as Letchford) on 16th September 1619 in Horley, Surrey. Susan (& Thomas) were mentioned in her father Joseph Browne's 'Will' of 1633. Thomas & Susan had possibly eight children 6. Phoebe Browne (Phebe) was baptised on 12th July 1601 in Rusper, Sussex. She probably married William Simons on 3rd February 1625 in Horley, Surrey (shown as Phobie). Pheobe (& William) were mentioned in her father Joseph Browne's 'Will' of 1633. 7. John Browne was baptised on 12th August 1604 in Rusper, Sussex. He was buried there on 5th November 1604 ('son of Joseph'). References
