- ↑ "Joseph Blackford, 80, died at 11:30 o'clock today noon at the home of his son, J. P. Blackford, 725 North County Line street within a few minutes after returning from his usual daily trip to the business section. On entering the house he exclaimed that he was ill. His daughter-in-law, rushed to his assistance and after helping him to a couch, attempted to telephone to a physician. Hearing an unusual sound, she returned to his side and found that he had raised up and tipped forward. Within another couple of minutes death occurred. The physician who was summoned pronunced (sic) death due to heart trouble. Last August Mr. Blackford was critically ill with stomach trouble for about eight weeks but had recovered his usual health. This morning he arose at 6 a.m., after eating breakfast, fed the chickens. Mrs. Blackford did not want him to go downtown, fearing he might fall on the slippery walks and be injured.
The deceased had lived with his son, J. P. Blackford since the death of his wife almost 17 years ago at Bradner, when he retired from active work in sawmills. For a number of years after 1875 he owned and operated a sawmill in Bradner. Joseph Blackford was born near Roberson, Crawford county, Ohio, August 1, 1836 and spent his entire life in this state. He was the last of a family of seven children. His marriage to the late Elizabeth Heckert occurred at Roberson, June 28, 1860. Only two of the ten children born to that union survive. They are John, of this city and Mrs. Jennie Kline, of Risingsun. Four grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. At the outbreak of the Civil war, Mr. Blackford enlisted in an Ohio troop cavalry and served four years. Although not injured in battle, he fell on a stump of a tree when called out t night and badly hurt his stomach, which caused him much suffering the balance of his life. He was a member of the G.A.R. and of the Evangelical church. In his earlier life he held the public office of constable a number of terms. The remains will be taken to Bradner Sunday morning and the funeral conducted from the Evangelical church at 11:30 o'clock by the pastor, Rev. Flora. Burial will be in the cemetery one mile east of Bradner beside the grave of his wife."
