In the 1850 census records; Joseph is listed as a cabinet maker; living in Allen Township, Darke county, Ohio; being 34 y/o and his wife: Eliza Jane 24 y/ o from Pennsylvania. two children listed, probably from an earlier marriage: Samuel - 8 y/o and William - 6 y/o.

Allen Township was formed in March 1839, being mainly the northern portion of Brown Twp bordering Mercer Co.

Allen Township's surface is rolling and occasional hills are seen near the Wabash and Stillwater streams. 1840 saw the first schoolhouse built on land owned since by Joseph BINGHAM in Sec 30. The Methodists established a church in 1854 two miles west of Rossville, with Rev. T. HIESTAND officiating,
