    "Devere Allen says (p. 182) that Joseph Allen was non compos mentis when elderly, and that his son, Benjamin Tillinghast Allen, known as Tillinghast, was appointed his guardian. Joseph died 20 Jan 1830, aged 74 year 8 months and 25 days, and is buried in the Judge Bellingham Tillinghast burial lot in West Greenwich. His estate amounted to upwards of $2,700, consisting of 80 acres and two small lots. His wife Sarah survived him by 22 years and was buried in New York State when she died in 1852. She had gone there on a visit."

Allen, late of the same Exeter deceased, John Pierce and Nancy his Wife in right of sd Nancy, John T. Allen, Benjamin P. Allen, Joseph Allin, Eason Allen, all of the Town of Paris, County of Oneida and State of New York, Charles Allen and George Allen of the Town of Lenox in the County of Madison, in said New York, Stephen Allen of Bridgewater in said County of Oneida, and Center Allen of the same Frankfort, all heirs at law and interested in the Estate of Joseph Allen late of said Exeter deceased, in consideration of Six Hundred dollars paid us by John Sweet of East Greenwich in the County of Kent in said State of Rhode Island ... one certain parcel of land situated lying and being partly in said Town of Exeter and partly in the Town of West Greenwich, containing by estimation Eighty acres with a dwelling house and Barn thereon standing, and is all and singular the same land which the said Joseph Allen deceased purchased of Benjamin Tillinghast Esq., late of West Greenwich, deceased, and is bounded Easterly on a highway, Southerly on land of Jonathan Lillibridge, Westerly on land of Arnold Ellis in part and partly on land of Thomas Lewis, Northerly on land late given by will by the said Benjamin Tillinghast, Esq., to the said Sarah Allen, widow ... and we Amey allen, Leenah Allen, Eliza Allen, Dorcas Allen, Catherine Allen, Mary Allen, Sally Allen and Avilla Allen wife to the said John T. Allen, Benjamin P. Allen, Joseph Allen, Stephen Allen, Carles Allen, Center Allen Eason Allen, and George Allen ... 21st day of February AD 1835, ...

    Know all men by these presents that I James Allen of Conewango, Cattaraugus County and State of New York, in consideration of Forty Dollars paid me by John Sweet of East Greenwich, County of Kent and State of Rhode Island, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, have remised released and forever Quitclaimed and do by these presents remise release and quitclaim unto him the said John Sweet all my right title interest and demand in and with to one certain tract or parcel of land lying partly in West Greenwich in the County of Kent and partly in Exeter in the County of Washington ... bounded ... Northerly on land late given by will of Benjamin Tillinghast, Esq. deceased, to my mother Sarah Allen ... that I Hannah Allen, wife of the said James Allen, do by these presents and for the consideration aforesaid yield up and surrender all my right of dower and power of thirds in and unto the above described land and premises unto him the aforesaid John Sweet. ...
