He was married by the 1850 census and was living with his wife's family. By 1860 they had moved to Ohio where they remained. He became a widower some time between the 1870 and 1880. He died some time between 1880 and 1900, likely in Trumbull Co., Ohio where he had been living for over twenty years.

Through DNA testing we know that his family name was originally Allan and that his roots were in Scotland.
