    Jonas Smith, s/o Jonathan Smith and Jane Peabody, b. 7 Jan 1692-3, estate administered 15 Oct 1765, m. (1) 17 Nov 1715 Mary Barnard, m. (2) Lydia ---, m. (3) Mary, m. (4) 5 Dec 1759 Anna (Livermore) Bemis.

  4. The birth of a daughter Lydia in Watertown in 1725 to Jonas and Lydia seems to be the only record to support the arrangement in Bond that shows four wives instead of two, since the first Mary must die to allow him to marry Lydia who is mother of this daughter, and then he has a wife Mary who died in 1759 months before he marries last wife Anna. No death record is found for Jonas's daughter Lydia, nor is there any hint of any children at all in his will. If the scenario with 4 wives is correct, we are missing the death of his first wife, marriage to his second wife, death of the second wife, and marriage to his third wife. This is a significant number of chances to confirm the 4 wives scenario - none of which have been found. In any event, a deed (Middlesex Vol. 36, p. 253) dated 14 Jul 1730 shows Jonas Smith of Watertown selling land with his wife Mary. So if he did have a wife Lydia, she died at, or soon after the birth of the daughter and he remarried before 1730. Note that Jonas's brother Nathaniel (who m. 5 Feb 1722/23 Lydia Church so had a wife named Lydia) had a daughter Lydia bp. 3 Oct 1725 for whom no birth record is found. (See Source:Littleton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. Records of Littleton, Massachusetts., p. 473.) Meanwhile, Mary Barnard's father names daughter Mary Smith in his will dated 12 Aug 1727 (Middlesex Probate 1075) with no indication that she was deceased. In 1740 Mary's nephew John Barnard chose Jonas Smith as his guardian (Middlesex Probate 1076), something probably not likely to happen if he was married to a different Mary at the time. It appears that Lydia's birth was recorded naming the wrong father, and that Jonas had only 2 wives: Mary Barnard until 1759, and then Anna (Livermore) Bemis.
