John Thomas Zealand was born in 1851 at Sutterton in Lincolnshire, son of Arabella Zealand, formerly Ashlin, and her husband Thomas Zealand, a boot and shoe maker. The family lived at Sutterton Fen to the north of the parish, some way from Sutterton village and in the fens to the west of Boston. John appears in the 1861 census living at Sutterton Fen with his parents and sister. John's mother appears to have died some time between 1861 and 1871, and the 1871 census finds John still living at Sutterton Fen with his sister and their widowed father. John took up his father's trade, also becoming a boot and shoe maker.
On 11th November 1873, John was married in the registry office in Sleaford to Naomi Brand Turner, who was from Heckington Fen, just west of Sutterton Fen. They returned to Sutterton Fen after their marriage, having seven children in the area between 1876 and 1891. In 1880 Sutterton Fen was transferred with other adjoining areas of the fens to form a new parish called Amber Hill.
Each census from 1881 to 1911 finds the family living at Amber Hill. John's father was living with them in 1881. John worked variously as a boot and shoe maker, grocer and postman, whilst Naomi worked as a dressmaker. In 1911 John and Naomi reported that five of their seven children were still living. Their son Oliver was also described as "feeble minded" in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses.
John died on 22nd August 1926, having collapsed suddenly whilst walking on the road near his home in Amber Hill. He was 74 years old. His obituary records that he had been a strong supporter of the Primitive Methodist Church, and was much respected. Naomi survived him by twelve years.
