John B. Whitlock, 74, of 4 Sauer Terrace, Durham, New Hampshire, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 1989, at York Hospital in Maine. Born Aug. 9, 1915, in Mt. Vernon, Ill., he was the son of Kelley B. and Mabel (Reid) Whitlock. He received a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University in 1937, and a master’s degree in 1941, as well as a doctorate in music in 1958 from the University of Iowa. Mr. Whitlock taught in public schools in Iowa and Illinois from 1937 to 1942, and served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945. He was band director of Loyola University, New Orleans, from 1946 to 1952, and assistant band director at the University of Iowa from 1952 to 1958. He then moved to New Hampshire and taught at the University of New Hampshire where he was director of the music education department until 1981 when he was awarded emeritus status upon his retirement. He was an active member and past president of New Hampshire Music Educators Association, member and past president of Strafford County Retired Teachers, and past director of the New England division of the Nusic Educators National Conference. Mr. Whitlock served as Sunday School superintendent, chori director and councilman of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member and past president of the Dover Rotary Club and the Durham Garden Club. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Marzolf Whitlock; two sons and daughters-in-law and one daughter and son-in-law, six grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews; and several cousins. Interment will be in Nauvoo, Ill. |
