Facts and Events
Name John Wheeler
Gender Male
Birth[3] Abt 1647 Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States
Marriage Abt 1693 to Elizabeth Perkins
Reference Number m-95648
Elizabeth Perkins
Death[1] 27 Apr 1706 Durham, Strafford, New Hampshire, United States

Lineage . Signed a petition to Massachusetts 20 Feb 1689 for training soldiers to protect the New Hampshire settlers from the "enemie" (Indians); it didn't work, as he and his wife were killed by Indians.

His sons lived with their "uncle" William Wheeler after he was killed. This has led to the assumption that John was the son of William Wheeler and Hannah Buss, William's parents. However, Source:Wheeler Families of Old Concord, Massachusetts showed that the John who was son of William Wheeler and Hannah Buss married Dorothy Hosmer. Speculatively, they offer the suggestion that John was the son of Obadiah Wheeler, who was co-administrator of his father's will in 1671, and beyond that nothing more is known. In this case, William is actually a second cousin, but being about 25 years older, maybe he was called an uncle?

  • John of England -> George -> William m. Hannah Buss -> William of Concord (guardian)
  • John of England -> Susanna -> John (second child of this name) -> William, Richard, Joseph (orphans)

John Wheeler killed by Indians at Oyster River (Durham, NH) 27 Apr 1706. Estate expenses mention child's funeral so at least one child killed, and possibly his wife, at same time. Guardianship of the three boys, William, Richard, and Joseph, granted to their "uncle" William Wheeler of Concord.
[Note the reference to uncle William Wheeler led this source, and others, to assume John was the son of William Wheeler and Hannah Buss, but that John has been shown to have married Dorothy Hosmer.]

  3. John was appointed co-administrator of his father's estate in Dec 1671, so born by 1650 to be of legal age. This implies he was a child of his father's first marriage, born before Mar 1648/49. The birth is estimated as about 1647 to fit him in a gap between Samuel and Susannah (Samuel is second oldest son, so older than John per father's will).
