John Walter Heskett was the oldest son of Thomas Endfield Heskett and Sarah Catherine Samms. In 1880 census he is the only child of the family living in De Witt, De Witt, Illinois. In the 1900 census he is in the San Pablo, Philippine Islands, in the Military and Naval Forces listing. He is still listed under the name John Walter Heskett. Some time around 1905 he changed his name to Patrick Louis Ryan. There has been a lot of speculation why the name change but the simplest is that he wanted a railroad job and another man passed the railroad test and did not want the job so John changed his name to take the job. John/Patrick lost an arm in a railroad accident. He joined a vaudville act called the One Armed Band with two other men who had lost arms also.
