Facts and Events
From John Waddington's "Who's Who" 1729 Ped. 1133 p. 230 Ped. 101 p. 320 John Waddington of Wibsey, nr. Bradford, also of Thornhills, Brighouse, Lighcliffe, nr. Halifax, abt. 1701 Birstall, bd. Lightcliffe 1744, md. 1729 Mary Haigh at Coley, daughter of John Haigh of Southowram, as widow resided at Hove Edge, Sugcliffe Wood, had issue son---Charles W., abt 1733 Rostrick, Elland, bd. 1800 Lighcliffe, md. 1754 at Elland. Son of John Waddington 1698 of Priestley Green, Hipperholme, and of Wike, nr. Halifax. The Haighs of Halifax Parish are descended from the very ancient family of Haigs of Bemersyde. The Haighs came to Norland, Halifax, about 500 years ago and in 1536 they were returned as land owners in the composition for great tithes in that parish. One of the Haigs of Bemersyde wrote a History of the Haigs and he said that those of Yorkshire spelled their name without the "h" until a certain old gentleman added it. The representative of the Norland Haigs in 1900 was George Henry Daton Haigh, of Grainsby Hall, co. Lincoln. The Coat of Arms, Crest and Motto of the Yorkshire Haighs are the same as those of the Haigs of Bemersyde in Scotland; the Haigs of Bemersyde go back to 1150. |
