Source: VA Newsletter Vol 23 Num 1, 15aug2004: John Mark Van Aken was born in Lenawee County, Michigan on 8 December 18 44 where he lived until fourteen years of age when he moved to Carbondal e, Jackson County, Illinois where he lived until 1862 and enlisted on 11 A ugust in Company F, 81st Ilinois Volunteer Infantry as a private. He part icipated in all the battles of his command until June 13, 1864 when at t he battle of Guntown, Mississippi he was taken prisoner and confined Ander sonville, Georgia and other Rebel prisons. On April 1865 he was nuster ed out in Springfield, Illinois. He was married on 22 December 1869 to Amy Samantha Luce of Belleville, Il lionis. From this union were born six children: John Andrew, born 14 November 1870. He married Delia Carpenter 13 March 1 906. John died 1904. Lena Caroline, born 18 August 1873. She married Lumen L. Smith on 19 Ju ly 1893. She died in April 1957. Sarah, born 5 May 1878 and died 5 June 1951. Amy Luce, born 6 March 1880. Charles Ralph, born 20 April 1882. Harrison, born 7 January 1886. Married in June 1907 to Susan Welch. Harr ison died in May 1958. John Mark's lineage is Marinus - Cornelis - Jacobus - Anthony - John McMa th - John Mark.
