Facts and Events
John Tyler was elected as a Democratic-Republican three times to represent Virginia in the U.S. Congress between 1816 and 1821. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates until 1825, and then as governor of Virginia from 1825 to 1827. He was elected as a Jacksonian to the U.S. Senate in 1826 and served until 1836. In 1840, he was nominated as the vice president on the ticket with William Henry Harrison.
