Born in Holland and lived in Nottinghamshire, England. Father of Richard Stout who came to America in about 1612, and was probably the first white settle in New Jersey. The name "Stout" oringinated in England (some say Germany) during the time of Knighthood. It was applied to a strong man who because of his strength and endurance bacame know as "Knight Stout". The shield of Knight Stout consisted of five leopard heads in black, forming a cross, and the Latin words "Concilio que manu" in silver. He carried this shield through the Crusades in 1096 AD. This information was taken from the book "I Was There" written by Owen Stout, an autobiography published by Stout's Print Shop in Paoli, Indiana 1960. References
