John Kirkland Sparrel - The death of John Kirkland Sparrel 68, occurred Wednesday morning 8/3/1938 at Warsaw Community Hospital. Mr. Sparrel contracted lobar pneumonia 2 weeks ago. Born 68 years ago in RedWing, Minnesota, he was the son of Kirkland and Mary Young Sparrel. He came to Warsaw when young and spent the remainder of his life here. Graduating from high school, he continued his education in Cornell University from which he was graduated 4 years later. By occupation he was a bookkeeper and an accountant, known for his ability in this work. For many years he was employed in the office of the late Garret Moody as head bookkeeper. He was also bookkeeper at the American Blueston Quarry south of the village many years ago. He served in this capacity at the time of the payroll robbery when bandits held up the carriage on the lonely road leading to the quarry. Bert Gage, later Collector of Internal Revenue and Mr. Sparrel were bringing the payroll to the office at the time. In fleeing the robbers fired, striking Sparrel in the arm. For the past few years he worked upon many separate accounts. John Kirkland Sparrel was one of the last direct descendants of Elizur Webster, 1st settler of Warsaw. Elizur Webster came here in 1803 and some time later his daughter married Andrew M. Young. The latter was a text book writer, popularly used and wrote a still well known "History of Warsaw". Mr. and Mrs. Young had 3 daughters, Mary Young was married to Kirkland Sparrel of Massachusetts. They had but 1 child. Mr. Sparrel never married. He is survived by 2 cousins, Fred Clisby of Parker, South Dakota and Mrs. Sarah E. Morton of Clifton Springs. Funeral was at Weeks Funeral Home with Rev. George D. Mills, officiating. *****Taken from The Wyoming County Times, Warsaw, NY. Page 4, dated Thursday, August 4, 1938.

Assume Sparrel should be Sparrell and Kirkland should be Kirkwood both because Kirkwood is a Sparrell family middle name but also because gravestone and other newspaper articles about the shooting years earlier
