John Singleton was baptised on 14th January 1818 at East Stoke in Nottinghamshire, son of Mary Singleton, formerly Tye, and her husband John Singleton, a cottager. Young John appears in the 1841 census working as an agricultural labourer and living with his parents at East Stoke. The day after the 1841 census John married Sarah Shepard. They had two daughters baptised at East Stoke: Mary baptised on 18th February 1842 and Elizabeth baptised on 5th February 1845. Sadly John's wife Sarah died either giving birth to Elizabeth or shortly afterwards; Sarah was buried two days after Elizabeth's baptism. She was only 24 years old.

The 1851 census finds John and his two daughters living with John's parents in East Stoke. He has yet to be traced after 1851.
