  • Douglass, Robert. The Baronage of Scotland: Containing, An Historical and Genealogical Account of the Gentry of that Kingdom. (London: Cadell & Davies, 1798), Page 90.
VII. Sir John Sinclair, sixth baronet, who having succeeded to the estate of Murkle, etc. etc. belonging to the late earl of Caithness, it is proper here to observe, that John Sinclair of Murkle, who succeeded to the seventh earl of Caitnesss anno 1698, as heir-male of that most noble and ancient family, was grandson of Sir James Sinclair of Murkle, brother german of George the fifth earl, and was himself the eight earl of Caithness. He had three sons, Alexander, John, and Francis; the two last left no male issue; and, he dying anno 1705, was succeeded by his eldest son, Alexander, ninth earl of Caithness, who married Lady Margaret Primrose, daughter of Archibald earl of Roseberry, by whom he had only one daughter, lady Dorothea Sinclair, married to James now Earl Fife, to whom she hath issue.
This earl Alexander, in the year 1761, executed a deed of entail of his paternal estate of Murkle, etc. whereby he disponed the same to the second and younger sons successively of his daughter the countess Fife, whom failing, to a certain series of heirs therein named; and the heirs to succeeding, are by this entail obliged to assume and carry the designation and arms of Sinclair of Murkle.
Upon the death of this ninth earl of Caithness in 1765, and no second son of his said daughter existing, Sir John Sinclair of Stevenson succeeded, in virtue of the said entail, to the estate of Murkle, etc. and was served heir of provision and entail accordingly upon the 19th August 1766; and, in terms of said ental, he now carries the designation and arms of Sinclair of Murkle.
He married Mary, youngest daughter of Mr. William Blair of Blair advocate, by whom he hath a son,
Robert, his apparent heir, and a daughter, Katharine.
