    REV. J. HENRY SHARPE, D.D., of Philadelphia, Pa., was born in 1842, and was reared in Steubenville, Ohio. He received his academical course at the high school and academy of the latter place. He entered Washington College, Washington, Pa., in 1861. Sharing in the war enthusiasm of the memorable summer of 1862, along with many of his classmates he enlisted in the Anderson Cavalry, the 4th Pennsylvania. With his regiment he saw service in the Cumberland Valley and Maryland, participating in the battle of Antietam. Later his regiment was transferred to sourthern Kentucky and Tennessee, where he was honorably discharged at the close of the year. He returned to college and was graduated with the class of ’63. In the fall of the same year he entered the Western Theological Seminary, Allegheny City, Pa., and was graduated in due course in 1866. He accepted charge of a new enterprise in the suburbs of Allegheny City, and under his care it was organized into what is now the McClure Avenue Presbyterian Church. In 1869 he was called to the pastorate of the Wharton Street Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia. In 1875 he accepted a call to be co-pastor of the Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, with the venerable Rev. Dr. Henry A. Boardman. In 1881 he was transferred to the pastorate of the West Park Presbyterian Church, West Philadelphia, of which he still continues pastor. From 1890 to 1893 he was one of the editors of the Presbyterian Journal, Philadelphia, and he has been a frequent contributor to the religious press of his denomination. His correspondence, covering experiences of travel during five different trips abroad, was published, the last being an extensive series on the Nile trip and the Holy Land. Dr. Sharpe was married in 1869 to Miss Mary Semple, daughter of Mr. John B. Semple, a well known banker of Pittsburgh, Pa. They had five children, of whom two daughters and a son are living.
