John Dalton was a sugar planter and lawyer. He went to University of the South in Sewanee, Tennesse for his undergraduate degree. He graduated on 7 Aug 1879. He continued his education and graduated with a law degree from the Louisiana State University on 8 May 1880. He served some time as a lawyer in Shreveport, LA, and then returned to Schriever in 1883 where he built Ardoyne Plantation, Schriever, LA. He was elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 1902 and served in this capacity for three terms. (Shaffer Papers, University of North Carolina)
