"Being the only surviving son, he succeeded to the farm property of hisfather upon his death, November 26, 1833, and made farming his mainbusiness through life. In early manhood, Mr. Rutherford was electedcaptain of the Dauphin cavalry, hence his military title. He has beenactive in politics, and was elected member of the Legislature on the Whigticket in 1848, and reelected in 1849. In 1857, he was elected to theState Senate for three years, on the Republican ticket. He has beentreasurer of the Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society for a long time,elected in 1864 and reelected annually ever since.
