John Rice was born on 21st November 1865 at Sheddock in the parish of Whithorn in Wigtownshire, Scotland. He was the youngest of six children of Jane Rice, formerly Lemon, and her husband James Rice, a ploughman. He appears in the 1871 census living with his parents and siblings in a one roomed house at Sheddock. By 1881 the family had left Sheddock and moved into the village of Whithorn itself, living in a two roomed house on the main street.
John's mother died in Whithorn 1890. John has not been found in the 1891 census. His next sighting is in 1901, by which time he was living at Croydon in Surrey with his brother James and James's wife and son. He was working as a painter and decorator. Four of John's five brothers and sisters had moved to the London area, leaving only John's eldest brother Peter in Scotland. For a few years around the late 1890s and early 1900s their widowed father (James senior) joined them in London too, living in Paddington with his eldest daughter Margaret. James senior returned to Scotland to live with his son Peter and died in 1907.
The 1911 census finds John still living with his brother James and his wife in the Thornton Heath area of Croydon, although James himself was away from home on census night. John's brother James died in 1913.
John stayed in the Croydon area, where he died in 1920 aged 55.
