William Carson was surety for his wedding and William Dent was witness. We know little of John Reed's ancestors more than they were not criminals or adventurers. They were Scotch-Irish, part of the middle class. Some were lawyers and some were Oxford scholars. They came to America to gain freedom to establish homes and freedom for Godly worship. They settled in Virginia previously to the American Revolution and their chief interests were farming and good horses. They loved their horses and had the best and cared well for them. It has been said that John Reed and his sons moved from Logan County, Kentucky to Giles County Tennessee. They were Scotch-Irish and came overseas to America, landing in Charleston and then went on to settle in Mecklenburg, North Carolina with other Ulster Presbyterians. They settled in Giles county Tennessee in the early 1800's. Tillman Reed states: The family moved from North Carolina to East Tennessee in the late 1700's or early 1800's. They moved through the Cumberland Gap, which was the only route across the Cumberland mountains and followed the Wilderness Road across southern Kentucky to Logan County Kentucky. They then came south into Tennessee and what was then the Chicksaw Nation. There was a road of a kind as far south as Nashville. Then they followed the Bumpass Trace which ran through western Williamson and Maury counties and came into Giles through Yokley Gap, then crossing Weakley Creek at Reed's ford, then to Agnew Creek and to Richard Creek about 1809-1810. They built cabins but evidently got over the Chicksaw line and the next year federal troops from Fort Hampton, Alabama tore down the cabins and made them move. There was a great deal of disagreement about the location of the line. The soldiers destroyed the houses and crops in 1809-1811.
