John Read, or Reade, of Weymouth made an agreement with Capt. William Tyng of Boston to lease 'Salter's Farm' of about 500 acres at Braintree 'which land Tyng lately bought of Mr. Coddington'. Reade was to have 7 male and 2 female servants, stock of cattle etc. and was to lease his farm at Weymouth and have no other, and the profits were to be divided between them, dated April 14, 1639 (Lechford's Notebook). How long John Reade continued as tenant of the 'Salter Farm' in present Quincy is unknown but probably not long for John Reade of the Mount had a land grant from Boston for 11 heads, 44 acres Feb. 24, 1639 (40) and before 1645 Gregory Belcher and John Gurney were occupants there and soon after that time John Reade settled in Rehoboth where he had eight children at least born to him, and died there Sep. 7, 1685.

He was made freeman of the Colony May 13, 1640. The location of his land grant is not known.

He Married Sarah Lessie, dau. of William of Blyborough Parish Co. Suffolk, England as shown by the Aspinwall Notorial Records under date of Nov. 27, 1645 at which time they were still called of Braintree. Two children are recorded at Braintree.

"John Read had lands adjoining to the lands of Philip Reed granted him on King 'Oke' Hill. He also had 18 acres to be laid out on the east side of Fresh Pond, 2 Feb. 1651-52. He made an agreement with William Tyng of Boston to carry on Tyng's farm at Mount Wollaston for ten years from 14 Apr. 1639. (Lechford s NoteBook, 94-99.) He removed to Mount Wollaston (Braintree) and had a grant of 44 acres for eleven heads there in 1640. He was made a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony 13 May, 1640.

He married Sarah Lessie, daughter of William Lessie of the parish of Blyborough, county of Suffolk, England. He removed to Rehoboth, where he died 7 Sept. 1685. He made his will 6 Jan. 1679, and it was proved 20 Oct. 1685. In it he mentions his wife Sarah, his sons Daniel, Israel, Moses, John, Thomas and Samuel, and his daughters Mary and Mehitable, and his grandchild John Reed. Overseers, Nicholas Pecke, Samuel Pecke and William Carpenter. His wife Sarah to be executrix. He was the ancestor of the Rehoboth Reads. His widow died at Rehoboth, 23 Apr. 1702."
