MR J. A. RANDS
A RESIDENT of Timboon for many years, Mr John Alexander Rands, died last week at Northcote, at the age of 85. Born at Waanyarra, near Dunolly, he was the eldest son of the late Mr and Edward Rands. After several years fossicking in his teens, he joined the Victorian Railways staff as a repairer in 1886 and acquired the rank of ganger, in 1897. He retired from the service in 1918.
SELECTED LAND AT TIMBOON IN 1994
In 1894, he took up a selection at Timboon and his family went to live there the following year. In 1922, he retired and lived in Camperdown till 1926, when his wife died. He then returned to the old home at Timboon, living there with his eldest son, John. Mr Rands enjoyed remarkably good health until last April. He took an active part as trustee and steward in the Timboon Wesleyan Church and was one of the committee responsible for getting the present building erected. He was also on the hall com mittee and a prominent member of Timboon and Camperdown Rifle Clubs. A keen shot he won several medals and trophies.
SON KILLED IN GREAT WAR
He was an enthusiastic worker for the Farewell and Welcome Home Committee at Timboon during the Great War, in which his youngest son, Albert, was killed. He is survived by two sons, John (Timboon), Alexander (Ararat), and three daughters Eliza (Mrs A. Cooper, Port Melbourne), Catherine (Mrs C. McKeown, South Yarra), Ethel (Mrs M. Hatty), and May. A brother, Albert, lives in Katanning (W.A.), and there is one sister, Louisa (Mrs Webb, Rheola). The burial took place at Camperdown cemetery, Rev. O. Keen assisted by Rev. S. C. Wilcock (Timboon) officiating at the graveside.
