"About 1830 John walked over the mountain from Mills River with a rifle, axe, pot, and a dog to claim land above his brother and to marry Nathan Cowards sister, Mary." (From The History Of Jackson County) John R. Queen and Mary "Polly" Coward had at least three children: Nancy, Martha, and Lewis (commonly called "Luke"). There is not much information on John R. In 1850 he was neighbor to Solomon Parker. ( see Parker history and the story of the murder.) John R. Queen was still listed on the 1880 census in Jackson County, North Carolina.
